Most pupils in England and Wales will go back for a couple of days this week, before returning to a full five-day schedule next week

Parents and children are preparing for a brand-new school year, with the summer holidays all but over.

Most pupils in England and Wales will go back for a couple of days this week, before returning to a full five-day schedule next week.

Here are all the term dates you need to know for the 2022/23 academic year.

When do schools go back?

In England and Wales, the majority of schools will go back on Thursday 1 September.

However, dates can vary by local council. To discover when schools are going back in your area, enter your postcode into the government website here, and it will direct you to the relevant page on your council’s site.

Term dates are different in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In Scotland pupils returned to school in mid-August, while in Northern Ireland all schools will go back on Thursday 1 September.

When are the school holidays in 2022/23?

Once again, in England and Wales term and holiday dates may differ by local authority, but the majority will follow this pattern:

• Autumn term (1) – 1 September to 21 October
• October half-term – 22 October to 30 October
• Autumn term (2) – 31 October to 16 December
• Christmas and New Year holidays – 17 December to 2 January 2023
• Spring term (1) – 3 January to 10 February
• February half-term – 11 February to 19 February
• Spring term (2) – 20 February to 31 March
• Easter holidays – 1 April to 16 April
• Summer term (1) – 17 April to 26 May
• Summer half-term – 27 May to 4 June
• Summer term (2) – 5 June to 21 July
• Summer holidays – 22 July to 3 September

Pupils will also be off on bank holidays.

Here are the school holiday dates for Scotland:

• Autumn holiday – 19 September
• Autumn mid-term break – 17 October to 24 October
• Christmas and New Year holidays – 21 December to 4 January 2023
• Spring mid-term break – 13 February to 17 February
• Easter holidays – 3 April to 14 April
• May Day – 1 May
• Victoria Day – 22 May
• Summer holidays – 28 June to 16 August

In Northern Ireland, the school holidays are as follows:

• Halloween – 31 October and 1 November
• Christmas and New Year – 22 December to 3 January 2023
• Mid-term – 16 and 17 February
• St Patrick’s Day – 17 March
• Easter holidays – 6 April to 14 April
• May Day – 1 May
• Spring bank holiday – 29 May
• Summer holidays – 1 July to 31 August
